Facebook is to the Internet what the Real World was to MTV
Published by Jon Pape January 9th, 2008 in Personal Growth.I had a realization today and it sort of scared me.
Facebook isn’t cool. Or to be more specific, its cool like that dickhead in high school was. It has all the moves, everyone is talking about it, and its the place all the popular kids want to hang out. But, its not that smart, it’s definitely not that innovative, and its sort of annoying. I mean apps, the most talked about aspect of Facebook are the chain letters of the new millenium. No, I don’t want to be a vampire. Stop poking me. Buy me a real drink cheap ass.
Thats when I realized the internet was like MTV, it wasn’t cool anymore, it was just there. They (business/media/first movers) found something that the new/old demographic liked (Facebook), and even though it was lame, that demographic didn’t know better cause it was new to them. The Internet isn’t where nerds hang out. Its popular in the lamest aspect of the word.
It just a matter of time before some developers are “way cooler” then other developers. I mean isn’t that what this whole Apple/PC thing is about. I’m glad you bought that iMac dual processor with a 17 inch screen so you could hang out in Starbucks and write Word docs for your college class but honestly, the only reason you have a Mac is cause your so stupid you’d break a PC.
“No, you don’t erase programs by deleting them out of your start menu.”
In conclusion, I’m too cynical, the Internet is not going to become less popular, and I’m not a gamer so I can’t go where its still nerdy and cool (thats ok cause I don’t like getting my ass handed to me by 12 year olds anyway). But, still, I’d feel better if I got why people thought Facebook was cool and not just because the main demographic is 18 to 25 year olds.
